Update: Russell and Opua marine infrastructure projects

Russell Wharf infrastructure

Far North Holdings has appointed Bellingham Marine to undertake the infrastructure upgrades planned for Russell Wharf.

Work on the $1.25 million project, paid for with a grant from the Provincial Growth Fund, is expected to start in March next year to fit in with the contractor’s work programme and avoid interfering with the operation of the wharf during the peak tourism season.

Much of the construction work is expected to be complete by April 2019.

The PGF grant that will enable this development does not include the $900,000 already committed by Far North Holdings and the Far North District Council to replace the dinghy dock, service jetty to the main pontoon, and other renewal work.

The design of the new wharf building has been subject to community consultation and Far North Holdings is finalising changes that include some the feedback received. Work on the new building is expected to start in April 2019.

Opua Pontoon

Bellingham Marine has also been appointed to develop the $1.66m pontoon planned for Opua Wharf. Work on this project is not expected to start until after Waitangi Day 2019, with completion scheduled for August 2019.
